The Volta River Authority (VRA) has partnered with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to provide vital relief items to communities affected by the ongoing spilling of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
The presentation of these much-needed items took place on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, in Adidome, Volta Region, and was attended by the Municipal/District Chief Executives of the Central Tongu, North Tongu, Keta, and Anlo Districts.
The relief items, which included mattresses, blankets, various food items, clothes, and toiletries, were handed over to Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, Director General of NADMO, on behalf of the affected communities.
The controlled spillage, which began on September 15, 2023, was initiated due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.
In line with its emergency preparedness plan and standard operating procedures, the VRA ensured that downstream communities were informed well in advance.
The VRA also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with NADMO and other stakeholders to closely monitor the situation and provide regular updates to the public as necessary, demonstrating a dedication to supporting the affected communities during these challenging times.
