The ICT Authority (ICTA) of Kenya has called upon public institutions to deliver their e-waste for proper management.
The initiative comes in the backdrop of a legal framework, specifically under Sections 176 and 177 of the Public Procurement and Assets Disposal Act (2020), which provides guidance on e-waste disposal in public institutions.
The ICTA, in partnership with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA), has set an ambitious target to collect 100,000 devices from 284 public organizations, such as State Corporations, Universities, and TVETs, this fiscal year. Institutions are advised to drop off their electronic waste at the National Refurbishment, Assembly, and E-waste Management Facility in Nairobi.
Stanley Kamanguya, CEO of the ICT Authority, acknowledged the project’s progress, emphasizing the need for increased attention to e-waste management to ensure environmental protection and to recover value from obsolete devices.
Zilpher Owiti, Director of Partnerships at the ICT Authority,also stressed the dual advantage of the initiative – safeguarding the environment and creating job opportunities for the youth.
The overarching goal of the e-Waste and Refurbishment Project is to foster a green economy, environmental protection, and reduce unnecessary dumps, aligning with global sustainability goals.
