Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized that Tanzania has not imposed a ban on the export of agricultural produce.
She made this comment during the annual National Farmers Day Exhibition (Nanenane) on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
Instead, the East African nation is focusing on implementing procedures to facilitate foreign traders’ engagement with Tanzania while ensuring proper oversight.
The outlined procedures aim to track the quantity of exported produce and the income generated, thus helping the government regulate unscrupulous traders.
President Samia directed the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Governments (PO-RALG), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), and Tanzania Immigration Services Department, to develop a joint system for formalizing the trading of produce outside the country, ultimately benefiting both the nation and its farmers.
The move comes as the government seeks to prevent vehicles from neighboring countries bypassing regulations to directly buy crops from Tanzanian farmers, addressing issues related to payment and oversight.
