Kenya Forest Officers are undertaking a four day training program on ‘Near Real-time Forest Alerts’ using Mobile GIS and Survey 12 at Kenya Kenya Forestry College.
Officers facilitating the operations includes Conservators, foresters station managers, forest Rangers, and forest scouts from CFAs from Baringo and Kericho Counties.
The training which is supported by the Centre for International Forest Research under the East & Southern Africa Forest Observatory (OFESA) is meant to build the capacity of the participants in forest alert technologies in order to enhance forest protection and monitoring.
Speaking during the opening of the training program, the KFC Principal Dr. Elizabeth Wambugu who was representing the Ag Chief Conservator of Forest, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko thanked CIFOR for the support in building the capacity of the officers to enhance protection and conservation of forests.
She also noted that the use of surveillance technology is the way to go as it enhances efficiency and near real-time response to forest disturbance. She said that the training should be also be made available to forestry students in order to enhance their technical capacity.
