Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has announced plans to introduce a fully online visa issuance platform by December 2026, a move aimed at streamlining consular services and strengthening engagement with the diaspora.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with Ghanaians in Southern California, Ambassador Smith unveiled a new initiative titled “Ghana 2.0: Empowering the Next Generation of Diaspora Investors and Streamlining Consulate Services.” The programme, he explained, is designed to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and create structured pathways for diaspora participation in Ghana’s development.
According to the Ambassador, his core mission is to foster strategic partnerships between Americans and Ghanaians to generate employment, strengthen key industries, and expand economic opportunities in Ghana.

“Ghanaians abroad, including those in Southern California, are the country’s greatest assets. They are among the most skilled, educated, and resourceful individuals anywhere in the world—businessmen and women, entrepreneurs, engineers, innovators, health professionals, educators, and IT specialists. They bring values such as discipline, resilience, hospitality, and an unshakable sense of community that defines us as a people,” he stated.
He emphasised that the accomplishments of Ghanaians in the United States not only bring honour to the country but also underscore the broader imperative for Ghana to excel among its continental peers.
Ambassador Smith further noted that Ghana cannot afford to have its brightest minds dispersed across the globe without structured avenues for contribution. He stressed that building sustainable partnerships to uplift communities, create employment for young people, and develop resilient industries must remain the ultimate national objective.
For his part, the President of the Ghana Association of Southern California, Marty Odonkor, described the initiative as part of a broader agenda to reset and rebuild Ghana through structured collaboration and strategic partnerships.
The proposed online visa platform is expected to modernise Ghana’s consular operations, reduce processing bottlenecks, and improve accessibility for investors and members of the diaspora seeking to engage more directly with opportunities in the country.
