Senior officials from the National Land Commission (NLC) and Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) conducted a high-level inspection tour in Kisumu County to advance preparations for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Suswa to Malaba.
The delegation was led by KRC Managing Director Eng. Philip Mainga and NLC Director of Valuation Joel Ombati Nyamweya, representing NLC CEO Ms. Kabale Tache Arero. They were joined by National Government Administration Officers from Kisumu County, headed by Regional Commissioner Florence Mworoa, along with NLC Kisumu County Coordinator Ms. Lynn Lawrence.

The team inspected the Kibos Railway Station, earmarked as a pivotal facility for the SGR project in Western Kenya, and toured the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Kibos, which is poised to become a major hub for cargo handling and logistics upon project completion.
This visit underscores ongoing inter-agency collaboration to evaluate infrastructure readiness and enhance coordination before construction begins on the multi-billion-shilling initiative.

Following Kisumu, the officials continued to Narok County for further assessments along the proposed corridor.
In parallel, the NLC and KRC have initiated sustained public participation and stakeholder engagement processes for compulsory land acquisition, ensuring transparency, legal compliance, and involvement of local communities, landowners, and other affected parties.
The SGR extension from Suswa to Malaba represents a strategic upgrade to Kenya’s regional transport network, designed to boost trade, streamline cargo movement from the Port of Mombasa, and strengthen connectivity across the East African hinterland, including links to Uganda and beyond.
