The Government of Kenya is advancing plans to establish a National Infrastructure Fund (NIF) aimed at accelerating nationwide development projects in critical sectors, including roads, water, electricity, and sanitation.
Public Service and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku announced that once approved, the NIF will unlock financing for large-scale infrastructure initiatives designed to strengthen economic growth and improve service delivery across counties.
Speaking at an event in Chogoria, Tharaka Nithi County, the CS stated that the Fund is expected to enable the expansion of key highways such as the Makutano–Mwea–Embu–Meru Road, which is earmarked for upgrading to a four-lane highway later this year.
Ruku emphasised that the Fund will only become operational after Parliament debates and passes the requisite legislation. He noted that a robust infrastructure network is essential for facilitating trade, boosting connectivity, and enhancing living standards for Kenyan citizens.

Water infrastructure will also receive priority support through the Fund, with investments expected to strengthen irrigation systems that are crucial for achieving food security in the face of climate variability. Additionally, the initiative will support the expansion of electricity connectivity to households, especially in rural areas, to drive industrialisation and economic inclusion.
The CS further revealed that the Kenya Rural Roads Authority has identified 400 local roads for improvement under the new framework, with official launch plans involving President Dr. William Ruto and Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki in the coming weeks.
Local political leaders welcomed the proposed Fund, highlighting its potential to open rural areas, enhance access to markets and social services, and spur inclusive development.
