The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is forging ahead with a comprehensive suite of modernization projects designed to enhance operational efficiency, increase capacity, and solidify Kenya’s position as a regional logistics hub. This commitment was underscored by KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto during a key stakeholder engagement in Mombasa.
Addressing industry leaders at the Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA) Leadership Breakfast, Capt. Ruto detailed the Authority’s strategic initiatives. These are centered on infrastructure expansion, equipment modernization, and process automation to support the national development agenda.
Infrastructure and Capacity Expansion
Capt. Ruto outlined several critical infrastructure projects currently underway. These include planned dredging works to enable the port to accommodate larger vessels, the construction of Berth One at Dongo Kundu to service the adjacent Special Economic Zone, and the ongoing development of Berth 19B at the Port of Mombasa to boost overall handling capacity.
Embracing Technology and Efficiency
A key pillar of the modernization strategy is the adoption of advanced technology. The MD highlighted the recent acquisition of energy-efficient, rubber-tyre gantry cranes to improve cargo handling and reduce vessel turnaround times. He further emphasized the pivotal role of automation in streamlining port operations.
“Automation will accelerate processes at the gate by leveraging the shift from manual to automated systems,” Capt. Ruto stated, pointing to increased speed and reliability as major benefits.

Lamu Port and Stakeholder Partnership
The MD also highlighted the growing strategic importance of the Port of Lamu, describing its strong performance as a cornerstone for the wider LAPSSET Corridor Project. He extended an invitation to KIFWA officials for a familiarization visit to the facility.
Commending KIFWA for its sustained engagement, Capt. Ruto praised the association’s role in strengthening industry collaboration. “We value this partnership and promise to work closely with KIFWA to advance the logistics industry,” he affirmed.
During the event, KIFWA honoured several long-serving members for their exceptional contributions to the sector. KIFWA Coast Region Chairman, Mr. Rajab Hamisi, applauded the resilience of the association’s members and credited KPA for fostering stakeholder relationships that enhance industry efficiency and competitiveness.
Performance Contract Targets Met
In a related development, the Kenya Ports Authority has successfully achieved most of its Performance Contracting targets for the 2024/2025 financial year. A recent evaluation by the Public Service Commission Performance Management team verified the Authority’s compliance with the performance agreement set by the national government.
Following the assessment, Capt. Ruto assured officials of the Authority’s dedication to continuous improvement in service delivery in the coming cycles.
