The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced substantial progress in its recovery efforts one week after the derailment of an Abuja–Kaduna bound train, which occurred on August 26, 2025, between Kubwa and Asham stations.
According to the NRC, engineers have successfully recovered a locomotive and four coaches, which have been transferred to Idu Station for further assessment using newly constructed tracks. Plans are underway for the deployment of heavy equipment to recover the remaining rolling stock.
The incident involved 618 people, including 583 passengers and 15 NRC crew members. While all individuals were accounted for, seven sustained injuries, and 20 persons were treated for shock and minor conditions.
To support affected passengers, the NRC set up an Incident Desk with dedicated phone lines to provide updates and assistance. So far, the Corporation has traced and reached 510 out of 583 passengers from the ill-fated train.
NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, commended security agencies for their swift intervention and reassured the public of the Corporation’s commitment to restoring full train operations quickly and safely. He emphasized that passenger safety and service reliability remain the NRC’s top priorities.
The Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali, also visited the derailment site, commending NRC’s recovery efforts and urging sustained measures to ensure smooth train services.
