The african development bank (afdb) has equipped the democratic republic of congo’s bureau of standards with modern laboratory tools under its programme for improving fisheries governance and blue economy trade corridors (profishblue), marking a significant milestone in enhancing food safety, trade, and economic growth in the country.
At a ceremony held on 22 august, nearly two dozen pieces of laboratory equipment—including calibration weights, water distillers, and centrifuge tubes—were officially handed over. Procured through the profishblue initiative, the equipment will enable the drc to conduct precise, internationally recognized tests on fish and fishery products.
This development responds directly to findings from the southern african development community (sadc) regional gap analysis study, which highlighted critical weaknesses in the drc’s fisheries sector, particularly in human resources and laboratory infrastructure.

The equipment donation highlights the power of partnerships, bringing together the Bank, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO), and SADC.
It also sets a model for replication across Africa as countries work to harmonise standards and strengthen intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“This is an investment not just in technology, but in people, prosperity, and Africa’s shared future,” Mpyisi said.
