The Tanzanian government has announced that advancing digital technology will be a cornerstone of its National Development Vision 2050, set to take effect on July 1, 2026, with the ambitious goal of growing the national economy to $1 trillion.
The announcement came during the launch of Vodacom Tanzania’s Sustainability and Environmental (SGE) Report in Dar es Salaam, where Minister for Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, highlighted the critical role of digital innovation in achieving the vision. “The government has laid out strategic plans to increase the adoption of technology and ensure more citizens utilize digital services,” Prof. Mkumbo said. “This will contribute significantly to the development of a modern, knowledge-based, and innovation-driven economy.”
The Vision 2050 emphasizes expanding smartphone access and fostering partnerships between the government and private sector to build a robust digital economy. These efforts are expected to drive economic growth and position Tanzania as a leader in technological advancement.
Vodacom’s Head of Media and Communications, Ms. Aneth Kanora, spoke at the event, detailing the company’s SGE Report, which focuses on three pillars: Planet, People, and Transparency. She underscored Vodacom’s contributions to Tanzania’s technological landscape, noting that digital innovation aligns closely with the goals of Vision 2050.
Development stakeholders, including Gabriel Bundala and Catherine Kimambo, praised the communications sector’s role in supporting the vision. They commended Vodacom for its efforts to expand digital connectivity, which they described as vital to Tanzania’s socio-economic progress.
