Leaders from South Africa’s water sector joined forces with partners from Sweden and Finland at the 2025 Stockholm World Water Week, forging stronger international ties to tackle pressing water challenges.
Held at the Waterfront Congress Centre, the annual conference, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), is a key platform for global water innovation and collaboration.
The South African delegation engaged in high-level discussions focusing on research and innovation, strategies to reduce non-revenue water, the development of future-ready utilities, and the use of digital twins—advanced technologies for optimizing water systems. These talks underscored a shared commitment to building resilient and efficient water infrastructure amid growing climate pressures.
This year’s conference, themed Water for Climate Action, highlighted the inseparable link between water and climate challenges. In a powerful keynote address, Marsudi emphasized water’s dual role as both a contributor to and a solution for climate change, captivating thousands of attendees. The theme sets the stage for global efforts leading up to the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, co-hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Senegal.
Throughout the week, World Water Week 2025 will feature high-level panels, innovative solution showcases, and the prestigious Stockholm Junior Water Prize presentation. Cross-sectoral partnerships will drive momentum toward achieving the 2030 Agenda, with a focus on sustainable water management and climate resilience.
South Africa’s active participation signals its dedication to leveraging global expertise and innovation to strengthen its water sector, positioning it as a leader in addressing Africa’s water and climate challenges.
