Kenya Power has officially opened its 2nd Grid and Innovation Conference, a high-level forum designed to harness innovative solutions to tackle emerging challenges in the energy sector.
Themed “Accelerating Innovation for Business Sustainability,” the conference has drawn over 400 participants, including employees, policymakers, researchers, and energy industry leaders.
Speaking at the opening session, Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, said innovation is central to the company’s mandate of delivering efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
“At Kenya Power, our mandate goes beyond keeping the lights on. We aim to be the energy solutions provider of choice. Innovation is not an option but the foundation of our growth, resilience, and ability to serve a growing economy,” he stated.
The event comes as Kenya works toward universal electricity access by 2030, a goal that requires fresh ideas to guarantee reliable power as demand rises from new technologies such as e-cooking and electric mobility.
Kenya Power’s Board Chairperson, Joy Brenda Masinde, emphasised the role of innovation in shaping the future of the sector. “Kenya’s leadership in renewable energy integration, smart grid technologies, and e-mobility is a testament to the critical role of innovation in the energy sector,” she noted.
As part of the conference, the company unveiled its Innovation Ideas Portal, hosted at the Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR), a Kenya Power subsidiary. The platform will capture, track, and support the development and commercialisation of energy-related innovations across the region.
Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, commended the initiative, saying it would strengthen collaboration between government, academia, and private sector players. “The innovation ideas hub will provide structured support to innovators to match solutions to the challenges we are facing in the energy sector,” he said.
This year’s edition of the conference will focus on key themes including emerging issues, knowledge management, system losses, revenue diversification, and Kenya Power’s digital transformation.
