President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, by one year.
Adeniyi, whose initial term was expected to end on August 31, 2025, will now continue in office until 2026. The decision, according to the Presidency, is aimed at allowing him to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete several critical initiatives currently being undertaken by the Service.
“These include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol,” the statement read.
The President, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, acknowledged the Customs boss’ role in steering the Service through key institutional reforms and reaffirmed confidence in his ability to deliver on the core mandates of the agency.

Mr. Adeniyi was appointed as Comptroller-General in June 2023 and has since led the agency through various reforms aimed at improving trade facilitation, boosting revenue, and tightening border security. His tenure has been marked by the deployment of technology to streamline Customs operations and the strengthening of inter-agency collaborations.
The Presidency believes that with the extension, the Service will be better positioned to meet its strategic objectives and support the federal government’s broader economic agenda.
