The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has drilled four oil wells in the Kolmani area of Bauchi State, as part of its push to deepen oil and gas exploration in northern Nigeria.
The Director at NNPCL, Yusuf Usman, disclosed this during a two-day interactive session on government-citizen engagement, hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna.
Usman noted that the company is currently assessing suitable technology for the next phase of drilling operations in Kolmani. He reaffirmed NNPCL’s broader commitment to accelerating energy development in the region.
“So far, the NNPCL has drilled four wells in the Kolmani area and is evaluating the appropriate technology to be deployed for the next phase,” he said.
Usman also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including five Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants currently under construction in Kogi State, as part of efforts to support the federal government’s energy transition drive.
“These plants are designed to improve energy access and supply across the North and are part of our contribution under the current administration,” he added.

The Kolmani oil field, which spans the Bauchi-Gombe border, is part of the Kolmani Integrated Development Project Nigeria’s first major oil discovery in the North. First announced in 2019, the discovery revealed sweet crude, gas, and condensates at a depth of over 13,000 feet.
In 2025, NNPCL signaled plans to resume drilling operations at the site, positioning the region as a potential contributor to Nigeria’s oil production, which has traditionally been concentrated in the South.
With renewed exploration and infrastructure rollout, the Kolmani project reflects a strategic shift toward more balanced energy development across Nigeria, particularly through natural gas as a transition fuel.
