The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) officially received its first Kayoola EVS electric bus from Kiira Motors Corporation during a handover ceremony at Kololo Independence Grounds
. The event marked a significant milestone in UCAA’s commitment to sustainable innovation and Uganda’s national development goals.
UCAA Director General Fred Bamwesigye highlighted the agency’s five-year journey with Kiira Motors, which began with a 2020 pilot program using the Kayoola EVS for staff transport between Kampala and Entebbe. “We are proud to receive the first of six electric buses, fully embracing this transformative innovation,” Bamwesigye said.

He emphasized that the locally manufactured bus supports UCAA’s climate protection efforts and aligns with Uganda’s Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Target by 2050, the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU) policy, and the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) agenda for economic transformation by 2040.

The Kayoola EVS, designed to eliminate diesel dependency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will enhance staff transport at Entebbe International Airport while improving passenger experiences. Bamwesigye described the bus as “a symbol of national pride, sustainability, and our commitment to better airport ground services.”

UCAA commended Kiira Motors for pioneering Uganda’s automotive industry and thanked the Government of Uganda and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation for their support in advancing e-mobility. The authority plans to integrate more electric vehicles into its operations, reinforcing its dedication to environmental and service delivery goals.
This handover underscores Uganda’s growing leadership in indigenous innovation and sustainable technology, positioning UCAA as a key player in the nation’s digital and green transformation.
