In collaboration with Meta and Deloitte, the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has launched AKILI AI, an innovative artificial intelligence-driven platform designed to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Africa.
The platform, powered by Meta’s Llama Open Source model and other advanced AI technologies, aims to tackle key challenges MSMEs face, including limited access to finance, market navigation difficulties, and the lack of tailored advisory support. By leveraging AI, AKILI AI seeks to unlock the full potential of African entrepreneurs, fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development across the continent.
A Game-Changer for African Entrepreneurs
Speaking at the launch, AUDA-NEPAD CEO Ms. Nardos Bekele-Thomas described AKILI AI as a major milestone in efforts to empower African businesses. She highlighted how the platform will provide essential tools to MSMEs while facilitating collaboration with key stakeholders, including governments, development partners, and international organizations.
“The launch of AKILI AI marks a significant milestone in our journey toward empowering African entrepreneurs. By leveraging AI, we are providing MSMEs with the tools they need to overcome challenges and drive sustainable development. This platform is a testament to our commitment to innovation and inclusive growth,” Bekele-Thomas stated.
She also emphasized the strategic collaboration with Meta and Deloitte, noting that the initiative showcases the potential of AI technology, particularly Meta’s Llama model, in addressing real-world business challenges faced by African entrepreneurs.

Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye, Kojo Boakye, underscored the transformative role of AKILI AI in expanding access to cutting-edge technology for small businesses.
