President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the substantive Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), effective January 23, 2025, for an initial four-year term.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed Aliyu’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
Aliyu has been serving as the acting Managing Director of the REA since March 2024. With over two decades of experience in energy and organizational development across both the private and public sectors, he has held key leadership positions in Nigeria’s on-grid and off-grid power sectors, as well as in water resources and transportation.

Before his appointment, Aliyu led the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project. He also served as General Manager of Corporate Services, Projects, and Research, and as Deputy General Manager at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET).
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Aliyu’s ability to drive the REA’s mission of expanding rural electrification, aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda on sustainable energy and power development.
