Born on September 8, 1970, in Tamale, Ghana, Haruna Iddrisu’s journey to prominence began in his formative years at Kulikuli School. He later graduated from the University of Ghana in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. A natural leader, Iddrisu rose to national prominence as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), an experience that honed his ability to navigate complex issues and inspire collective action.
After obtaining his Barrister-at-Law qualification in 2002, Iddrisu became a member of the Ghana Bar Association, demonstrating his versatility as both a lawyer and a policymaker.
Iddrisu’s entry into mainstream politics was marked by his appointment as the National Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2002, a role he held for eight years. He transitioned to parliamentary politics in 2004, representing the newly created Tamale South Constituency. With an unbroken record of parliamentary success, he is the only Member of Parliament in Ghana’s history to run unopposed in party primaries for four consecutive terms.
His parliamentary career has been equally distinguished. Iddrisu served as the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications and as the Minority Spokesman on Communications when his party was in opposition. He retained his parliamentary seat in the 2008 elections with an overwhelming 78.2% of the vote, a testament to his popularity and effectiveness as a legislator.
Haruna Iddrisu’s ministerial career has been defined by impactful leadership across key portfolios. As Minister for Communications from 2009, he spearheaded Ghana’s representation at international ICT forums, including the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis in 2005. He later served as Minister for Trade and Industry and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, where he championed policies to enhance trade and labor conditions in Ghana.
Beyond the halls of parliament and the corridors of ministerial offices, Iddrisu has demonstrated a deep commitment to his constituents. In January 2020, he donated a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound to the Duunyin community, underscoring his belief in grassroots development.
