The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that vehicle owners can begin registering their motor vehicles for the 2025 registration period from January 2, 2025, at all DVLA operational offices across the country.
In a statement issued, the DVLA management informed the public that the new registration process includes the issuance of a registration smart card and a Certificate of Title. These documents will encapsulate details of the vehicle being registered and include a new suffix (-25) to represent the year of registration, in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 (L.I. 2180).
The first stage of the registration process, which can be initiated immediately, involves presenting the vehicle and customs entry documents at any authorized Vehicle Testing Station for equipment-based testing. This is followed by presenting the vehicle, customs entry documents, and all relevant documents at any DVLA office for customs checks and clearance, vehicle inspection, and validation of documents. DVLA officials will then issue an invoice for the required services.
The second stage of the registration process, beginning January 2, 2025, requires vehicle owners to make payment by cash or other electronic means at their preferred registration centers. They will also need to have their biometric details captured at the DVLA registration center and collect their registration documents, license plates, and other ancillary items to complete the registration process.
According to the DVLA statement, a total of 175,000 vehicles have been registered since the introduction of the Electronic Vehicle Registration system last year. The Authority emphasized that only original copies of customs entry documents and any other supporting documents should be used for the registration process, with the National Identification Card (Ghana Card) serving as the primary document to prove identity.
The DVLA also cautioned the public to avoid engaging unauthorized persons, including middlemen, during the registration process to prevent fraud. “Persons duly authorized to transact business for or on behalf of the vehicle owner shall present a Power of Attorney and their National ID for verification,” the statement added.
This new registration process is part of the DVLA’s efforts to streamline vehicle registration and improve service delivery across Ghana.
