Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has launched a new music streaming platform, Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), to boost the local music industry.
Built in Ghana, the platform is dedicated to showcasing and supporting Ghanaian musicians.
At the unveiling event, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that GMX seeks to bridge the gap between local artists and their audiences, connecting Ghanaian music fans both within the country and internationally.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significance of the music industry in Ghana, lauding the joy, comfort, and hope that Ghanaian musicians bring to the public.
However, he also pointed to a persistent challenge: inadequate compensation from foreign streaming platforms.
“They receive very little from the foreign music streaming apps,” he said, acknowledging that many Ghanaian artists struggle to make fair earnings despite their large fan base. GMX, as explained by Dr. Bawumia, is designed to remedy this situation by offering fair compensation and preserving the work and legacy of Ghanaian artists.
“This is what the Ghana Music Xperience, which is more than just a music streaming app, offers,” he noted. He stressed the need for a platform dedicated solely to Ghanaian music, calling it “a welcome addition in our digitalization journey as a country” and a key resource in promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage.
Dr. Bawumia encouraged all Ghanaians to support GMX, expressing optimism for the platform’s impact on the music industry.
“I am very confident that with the support of all of us, through the patronage of the GMX, the game will now change for our musicians and industry to get their deserved compensation,” he added.
As the platform officially launches, industry stakeholders are hopeful that GMX will usher in a new era for Ghanaian music, empowering artists and amplifying their reach both locally and globally.
