Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched GoRide, a new ride-hailing app designed to transform Ghana’s traditional taxi system by enabling local drivers to operate in the digital space.
The app, launched on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, is seen as a major step towards modernizing the nation’s transport sector and supporting financial inclusion.
“This is not just another app,” Dr. Bawumia remarked.
“GoRide is a digital representation of our traditional taxi system, tailored to meet the needs of Ghanaians and to keep earnings within our borders.”
GoRide was developed through a public-private partnership, primarily to empower drivers under the Ghana Private Road Transport Union. With a commission rate of just 10%, the app allows drivers to keep more of their earnings compared to other platforms, thus improving their financial stability.
The Vice President highlighted how GoRide will not only offer drivers a fairer earning opportunity but will also help them support their families. “With GoRide, drivers have a platform that values their work and recognizes the contributions they make to our economy,” he said.
A key feature of GoRide is its integration with Tap’n Go, a local digital payment platform that ensures secure and efficient transactions.
This innovation not only boosts customer satisfaction but also supports Ghana’s local fintech ecosystem, reinforcing the government’s commitment to building homegrown solutions.
Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of this feature in enhancing the digital economy, saying, “By using a local platform for payments, we are helping to grow Ghana’s fintech sector and create job opportunities across related industries, from vehicle maintenance to banking and insurance.”
The launch of GoRide is also part of a broader mission to promote financial inclusion.
By bringing drivers into the formal financial system, GoRide allows them access to essential services like loans, insurance, and pension schemes, with 1% of earnings allocated toward drivers’ pensions for long-term stability.
“GoRide is more than an app—it’s a symbol of empowerment, innovation, and local pride,” Dr. Bawumia said.
