The Government of Ghana, through the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has submitted a new Legislative Instrument (LI) to Parliament aimed at restricting mining activities within the country’s forest reserves.
The proposed Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Revocation Instrument, 2024, seeks to revoke the existing LI 2462 and reinforce the protection of forest areas against the impact of mining.
This measure is part of the government’s broader effort to address environmental degradation caused by both legal and illegal mining activities.
Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mr. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, announced the introduction of the new LI during his welcome address on the floor of Parliament.
He emphasized that the new regulation has been developed through a collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Ministry of Justice.
