President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the Jamestown Fishing Harbour on Friday, September 13, 2024.
The state-of-the-art facility, which has been anticipated since the 1960s, marks the realization of a long-standing promise by the Akufo-Addo administration to revitalize Ghana’s fishing industry.
“This project is not just an infrastructure; it represents our commitment to improving the livelihoods of our fisherfolk,” the president remarked during the ceremony, highlighting the significance of the harbour for the local community.
The newly constructed harbour is expected to boost the local economy, providing modern amenities to support the fishing industry.
With a 200-capacity fish market, a 60-tonne ice-making plant, a 200-tonne cold store, and various market stalls, the facility is equipped to handle both local and national demand.
“This is not just a fishing harbour, it’s a symbol of hope,” said a local fisherman.
The harbour is also seen as a critical step towards reducing Ghana’s reliance on imported fish, while creating jobs and improving fish production domestically.
The inclusion of a daycare center within the harbour complex demonstrates the government’s focus on compassion and inclusivity, particularly for women in the fishing industry. This feature allows women to balance their roles as caregivers and active participants in the economy.
“This is a government that listens and acts,” President Akufo-Addo stated, emphasizing the holistic approach taken in the design of the facility.
