Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has inaugurated a state-of-the-art office complex for the Minerals Commission in Akim Oda.
The new facility sought to enhance the commission’s monitoring and regulatory duties across the Birim Central Municipality and the Eastern Region.
At the inauguration ceremony, on Wednesday 5th June, 2024, Hon. Jinapor emphasized that this development is part of the government’s strategy to decentralize operations and ensure the commission’s presence is felt closer to mining operators and communities.
“The construction of this modern office underscores the Akufo-Addo administration’s dedication to revitalizing the mining sector through sustainable and environmentally sound practices,” he stated.
He also highlighted the significant expansion of the Minerals Commission under the current administration, noting the establishment of four new district offices, 12 satellite offices, and two observatory offices.
Hon. Jinapor further announced that the new office would supervise not only Akim Oda but also neighboring areas like Akwatia, Anyinam, and Kade, which have a rich history of community mining.
“With this fully furnished office commissioned, I want to assure you that Akim Oda will soon benefit from a Community Mining Scheme,” he said, acknowledging the persistent efforts of Alexandre Kwasi Aquah, MP for Akim Oda.
Hon. Barbara Oteng Gyasi, Chairperson of the Minerals Commission Board, reinforced the importance of expanding the commission’s reach to effectively monitor mining activities and protect the environment.
Oseadieyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, the Paramount Chief of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, praised the government’s efforts and pledged to support adherence to mining regulations.
