The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning to Nigerians regarding a new malware threat aimed at Facebook users.
Identified as ‘Ov3r Steale,’ the malicious software has been flagged by NITDA’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT) for its deceptive tactics.
According to the advisory released on Monday, the malware operates by luring users through fake job advertisements, subsequently gaining access to sensitive information and extracting data for potential attacks.
NITDA emphasized the severity of the threat in their alert, stating, “Users become infected by clicking on these malicious advertisement links. The malware employs various execution methods to extract sensitive data from victims.”
The agency highlighted the multifaceted nature of ‘Ov3r_Stealer,’ warning that it could serve as a conduit for other malware, including ransomware.
“Ov3r_Stealer poses a significant risk by silently exfiltrating a wide range of personal and sensitive information including geolocation (based on IP), hardware info, passwords, cookies, credit card information, auto-fills, browser extensions, crypto wallets, Office documents, and antivirus product information.
“This data is subsequently transmitted to a Telegram channel where it is possibly sold or used for phishing attacks,” NITDA added.
