President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized the government’s intentional efforts in strategic planning to ensure the safety and security of Ghana.
This was announced during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
He highlighted that Ghana has remained unaffected by the extremism witnessed in neighbouring countries due to meticulous planning.
“Mr Speaker, I am glad to be able to report that the entire territory that makes up our nation is safe, secure and under the control of the
government and people of Ghana.
This might sound like a pedestrian statement with which to start a Message on the State of the Nation. Unfortunately, far from it being an
everyday truism, this is no longer a statement or claim that can be easily made in these times in the neighbourhood in which we are. West Africa
is under threat of terrorism and violent extremism, rapidly spreading southwards from the Sahel to coastal West Africa.
We can no longer take the territorial integrity of our countries for granted.
Indeed, many of our neighbours have already fallen victim, and lost large
portions of their territories to extremist groups, and Ghana, by the grace” President Akufo-Addo said.
Akufo-Addo underscored the commitment to the well-being of the armed forces and all security agencies, emphasizing the allocation of resources to ensure their readiness.
This development follows President Akufo-Addo’s presentation ofthe State of Nations Address (SONA) 2024 in parliament this afternoon.
The performance of SONA is therefore a constitutional duty as prescribed by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
It says, “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation (SONA).”
The SONA serves as a means to inform the nation about the government’s present economic, political, and social initiatives.
It is also a means by which the President summarizes the accomplishments and plans of his government for the remining period of his term of office.
