County Government of Mombasa in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies, an initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), has launched the inaugural Mombasa Annual Road Safety Report.
Shedding light on critical data sourced from police crash records spanning from 2019 to 2022, the report revealed a stark reality, with 93 percent of reported deaths attributed to pedestrians, motorcyclists, tricyclists, and pedal cyclists.
Pedestrians constituted half of the reported fatalities, and males accounted for 82 percent of the deaths in the mentioned period.
The report also pinpointed alarming statistics, highlighting that the highest number of deaths in 2022 occurred among individuals aged 20 to 29. Fatal crashes were most frequent between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., with 45 percent of deaths transpiring on weekends.
High-risk fatal crash locations were identified, emphasizing areas such as Mombasa to Nairobi Road and Changamwe Ward along Magongo Road.
BIGRS Initiative Coordinator in Mombasa, Vipul Patel, stressed the urgent need for collaboration among stakeholders at both local and national levels to implement interventions aimed at saving lives.
Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir expressed gratitude to BIGRS for their collaboration, emphasizing the importance of data-driven measures to safeguard all road users, particularly the vulnerable groups highlighted in the report.
