The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a strict warning against the use of Woven Polypropylene (PP) bags in packaging cement and other building materials aimed at curbing plastic pollution and safeguarding the environment.
The CEO of the EPA, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, during a news conference held in Accra on Wednesday emphasized the urgency of controlling the industry’s use of plastic products, particularly PP bags.
The EPA, acting under the Hazardous, Electronic, and Other Waste Control and Management Regulations, Act 2016, Act 917, alongside the Ministry responsible for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has developed a National Plastic Management Policy.
This initiative is intended at addressing the plastic waste pollution menace in the country, promoting environmentally friendly alternatives, and protecting aquatic life.
The EPA has called on industry players and the general public to adhere strictly to the use of degradable and environmentally friendly paper bags for cement packaging, citing the detrimental environmental impact of polypropylene bags and their contribution to plastic pollution on a global scale.
The agency also announced plans for unannounced market visits to enforce these regulations and ensure compliance.
