The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Attah, revealed that the government has invested a staggering amount of GH¢8.4 billion over the past seven years in its flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) program.
Addressing parliament during the presentation of the 2024 fiscal policy and budget statement, the minister emphasized that this substantial investment has facilitated access to quality high school education for approximately 5.7 million Ghanaians.
The government has allocated GH¢3.6 billion to the School Feeding Programme and GH¢248.5 million to Capitation Grants, benefitting 3.8 million pupils at the basic level and supporting the foundational education of over six million pupils.
Minister Ofori Attah affirmed the government’s commitment to transforming society by addressing the root causes of poverty through education.
He stated, “Government’s flagship Free Senior High School and TVET program continues to create and expand access to secondary education in the country. In a generation’s time, when we have a more educated population that sustains social mobility and cohesion, we will appreciate the significance of these decisions and investments.”
Looking ahead to 2024, the minister assured that the implementation of these transformative initiatives will persist, further shaping the educational landscape in Ghana.
