The Katsina Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to combat transborder crimes, pledging to tackle issues such as arms smuggling, human and drug trafficking, and economic sabotage in the state’s border communities.
Muhammad Umar, the area comptroller, expressed this dedication during his visit to various border communities in Katsina State over the weekend.
Katsina shares extensive borders with the Maradi and Zinder regions of Niger Republic, making it a critical area for border security.
Comptroller Umar engaged in an interactive session with community leaders, local government chairpersons, business association leaders, and traditional title holders.
He emphasized that the NCS is collaborating with other security agencies to minimize banditry, kidnapping, and transborder crimes.
The NCS aims to strengthen national security for improved trade facilitation and economic development, ensuring the activities of customs officers do not hinder residents’ economic activities.
The state’s porous borders have been exploited for human trafficking and weapons smuggling, contributing to the security challenges in Katsina, including banditry and terrorism.
This commitment by the Nigeria Customs Service reflects a concerted effort to enhance border security, suppress illegal activities, and facilitate legitimate trade, ultimately working to safeguard the nation’s security and economic development.
