The Minister for the Ministry of Energy, Honourable Matthew Opoku Prempeh has emerged as the Public Sector Global ‘Minister of the week’. He is our minister of the week from the month July 30th to August 5th, 2023.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is by profession a doctor. Before taking an interest in politics, Hon. Prempeh served in several positions as his final was the Executive Chairman of Keyedmap Services Limited, a private security firm based in Ghana. He left his post at Keyedmap in 2009, a year after he entered Ghana’s political scene in 2008. Successfully running on the New Patriotic Party ticket, he won his first election and became a representative for the Manhyia Constituency in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
With his unique abilities and prowess, faith led him to serve on several Committees such as Health, Appointments, Special Budget, and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation among others.
In 2017, he was sworn in as the Minister of Education by the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He served until January 2021 when he was re-appointed as the Minister of Energy to replicate better his prowess in the sector of energy.
In light of developing and ensuring a reliable high quality energy service at the minimum cost to all sectors of the economy, the Ministry led by Hon. Prempeh launched a long term framework (2022-2070) which guarantees the file supply security due to a diversified fuel mix including natural gas and nuclear energy.
In his befitting effort as the industry head, the ministry has inaugurated the Ellen Moran Primary Substation in Kanda in the Greater Accra region.
His significant efforts have also led to the inauguration of the Kasoa BSP, a 435 MWA Capacity Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation, the second largest bulk supply point in Ghana. This project was commissioned by the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Amongst other efforts, Hon. Prempeh has made a recognized effort to mitigate as well as develop a reliable supply of high quality energy services for the Ghanaian economy and for export.
