The Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame has reaffirmed government of Ghana’s dedication to protecting intellectual property (IP).
During a meeting with the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Daren Tang, in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr. Dame assured investors and businesses operating in Ghana that their IPs would be fully safeguarded in accordance with international laws and the country’s robust legal regime.
Recognizing the pivotal role of IP in development, particularly as Ghana hosts the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Mr. Dame emphasized that innovation and industrialization were key components of national advancement, supported by the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
During the meeting, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and WIPO Director-General Daren Tang discussed Ghana’s intellectual property development and the country’s role as the Coordinator of the African Group of Member States of WIPO for the first time in over two decades.
Mr. Dame called for support in securing senior positions in WIPO for Ghanaians, including Dr. Edward Kwakwa and Loretta Asiedu.
He also requested WIPO’s technical assistance to enhance Ghana’s IPAS system and a geographical indication project aimed at improving the utilization of IP systems for development.
Director-General Tang commended Ghana for its leadership in intellectual property matters on the African continent, highlighting the registration of the “Bolga Basket” as an IP geographical indication and the deposit of the instrument of ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.
He lauded these steps as significant strides in IP protection by Ghana.
