The Tanzanian government has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) to enhance access to information services in the country.
The cooperation strategy agreement was signed by the Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Mr Nape Nnauye, and the Unesco representative to Tanzania, Mr Michel Toto.
Unesco, known for its promotion of freedom of expression, access to information, and media development, will utilize this strategy to guide its engagement with the government in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to information and communication.
Under the five-year cooperation, which spans from 2022 to 2027, Unesco aims to assist the Tanzanian government in overcoming challenges, improving monitoring and reporting processes, and accelerating actions toward achieving the SDGs.
Mr Toto emphasized the importance of the cooperation, stating that the country cooperation strategy will provide a long-term vision for Unesco’s technical assistance, effectively addressing Tanzania’s development needs and priorities in the realm of communication and information.
The agreement includes endeavors such as promoting freedom of expression and the right to information, enhancing knowledge sharing and digital literacy, and supporting media independence.

The partnership will also address legal and policy obstacles, including the safety and security of journalists, media literacy, and digital citizenship. Minister Nnauye expressed his optimism about the collaboration, highlighting its potential to mobilize resources, strengthen partnerships, and promote critical thinking and informed societies.
He emphasized the significance of empowering citizens to address local issues and make informed decisions, ensuring that no one is left behind in Tanzania’s development journey.
