The Department of Social Development has urged parents, caregivers, Civil Society Organisations (CSO), and all South Africans to safeguard children from harmful practices as the world observes International Children’s Day.
With the theme “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children,” this year’s commemoration emphasizes the need to eradicate various forms of abuse that children endure.
Harmful practices such as child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and honor-based abuse continue to perpetuate physical and emotional harm, denying children their rightful childhood and hindering their future prospects.
In alignment with the Constitution of South Africa, the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, and international instruments like the AU Charter on the Rights and welfare of the Child, the Department of Social Development calls on society and child-focused organizations to not only observe this day but also actively protect children from harm.
