Deputy President, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua has flaged off a consignment of assorted grains from Port of Mombasa to alleviate food shortages occasioned by ongoing drought in the country.
The 25,000 metric tons of wheat & 23,000 tons of sorghum donated by international partners through the United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP) Kenya and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Kenya will be distributed to ASAL region worst impacted.
WFP has for over two decades utilized Port of Mombasa for the coordination of humanitarian programs to the region, aiding in the distribution of food & other items to the hinterlands & the East, Central and Horn of Africa
Between 2018-2020, the Port of Mombasa handled over 250,000 metric tons of cargo and over 5000 containers of WFP cargo both food and non-food items like motor vehicles destined for Kenya and the region.
