Ghana will celebrate its 66th Independence Day at Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, today, March 6, 2023.
The event will be co-hosted with the Adaklu District at the Volta Regional Youth Resource Centre at Adaklu.
With the theme “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose”, the country has President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea Bissau, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as the Special Guest of Honour.
More than 5,000 participants, including diplomats, pastors, traditional leaders, and other dignitaries, have traveled from all around the nation to attend the ceremony.
In order to open the regions to the outside world and stimulate the local economy, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo determined in 2017 that the independence celebrations would be held on a rotating basis.
This is the first time the Volta Region is hosting the national independence parade.
Together with other activities, there will be a parade including a total of 22 contingents from the various security agencies and 12 from the various schools in the Volta Region.
After 83 years of British colonial rule, Ghana declared its independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to do so.
Ghana was declared to be “free forever” from colonial authority by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s first president, signaling a significant shift in the history of its administration.
Since then, every March 6 is observed with a variety of events, some of which are held during the entire month of March, both in Ghana and among Ghanaians living abroad.
