Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Francis Wanderi is the latest of the Cherera four to resign from the electoral body.
He becomes the third of the four Commissioner who disputed the August 9 presidential results announced by chairman Wafula Chebukati.
“This decision, while extremely difficult and agonizing for myself and my family, has been necessitated by undue and unwarranted public lynching based on falsified information tainting my reputation and integrity,” Wanderi said.
He however, insisted that he is innocent, and has diligently worked to defend and protect the constitution for the 16 months he has served at the Commission.
“As I tender my resignation today, I do so not because I am guilty of the allegations levelled against me by the petitioners, but because there comes a time when the country is more important than any individual.”
He added, “I remain hopeful that the rule of law as envisaged in the Constitution will continue to safeguard all Kenyans and trust that the Government will institute a standing body to address the corporate governance issues within IEBC, including disputes among Commissioners, to avoid future “boardroom raptures”. “
Commissioner Wanderi’s exit follows that of Justus Nyangaya and vice chair Juliana Cherera.
The Cherera four commissioners are accused of attempting to subvert the will of the people with regard to the August 9 presidential elections
The four disowned results were announced by IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati.
Their resignations came after President William Ruto appointed a nine-member tribunal to probe the suspended commissioners, chaired by Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule.
Other members of the team include Carolyne Kamende Daudi, Mathew Njaramba Nyabena and Col. (Retired) Saeed Khamis, Kibet Kirui Emmanuel, and Irene Tunta Nchoe as joint secretaries.
