The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has led a delegation of senior staff on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honourable (Alhaja) Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.
During the meeting, Dr. Olatunji commended Honourable Omidiran for her leadership and unwavering commitment to promoting equity, fairness, and national cohesion since assuming office. He underscored the strategic role of the FCC within Nigeria’s governance structure, describing it as a major data controller and processor due to the sensitive and voluminous nature of the personal data it handles.
“Compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, will not only safeguard the rights of citizens but also strengthen transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the operations of the FCC,” Dr. Olatunji stated.

In her response, Honourable Omidiran praised the NDPC under Dr. Olatunji’s leadership for its ongoing efforts to promote data protection and privacy awareness across the country. She acknowledged the critical importance of data privacy in enabling the FCC to effectively discharge its mandate of ensuring equitable representation and national unity.
The two leaders expressed mutual interest in stronger institutional collaboration. Dr. Olatunji emphasised that partnership between the NDPC and the FCC would support the successful implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

To further this cooperation, Dr. Olatunji offered the FCC capacity-building support, including specialised training programmes and certification of staff as Data Protection Officers (DPOs). He also extended access to the NDPC’s Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) for enhanced staff development in data protection practices.
The visit is seen as a strategic move to align the FCC’s operations with national data protection standards, ensuring that sensitive citizen data managed by the commission is adequately protected while it continues its role in fostering inclusive governance.
