The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is actively positioning Mombasa and Lamu as premier cruise destinations on the Indian Ocean as it participates in the world’s leading cruise industry event, Seatrade Cruise Global, which opened on Monday at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Now in its 41st year, the four-day conference and exhibition (13–16 April 2026) has drawn executives, port authorities, and policymakers under the theme “Beyond the Horizon: Leveraging Cruising’s Strength and Scale to Drive Innovation.” The event focuses on balancing strong post-pandemic recovery and fleet expansion with sustainability, technological advancements, and responsible environmental practices.
Industry leaders, including Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the MSC Group’s Cruise Division, emphasised the need for collaboration and resilience. “The next phase of cruising will be defined by how well industry players balance rapid growth with responsible environmental stewardship,” Vago said during opening sessions.

For Kenya, the timing could not be more strategic. KPA has recorded a significant increase in cruise ship calls at the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu, with several new luxury liners adding Mombasa to their Indian Ocean itineraries. This surge highlights growing global interest in Kenya’s pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, diverse wildlife, and “cruise-to-safari” experiences.
The Kenya Tourism Board has described cruise tourism as the fastest-growing segment in the country’s tourism industry, with passenger arrivals registering substantial year-on-year growth in recent seasons. In 2024 alone, cruise passenger numbers rose sharply, contributing to broader tourism recovery.
A high-level KPA delegation is attending the conference to capitalise on this momentum. The team, led by General Manager for Corporate Services Mr. Edward Kamau (representing Managing Director Captain William Ruto), includes Finance General Manager Mr. Geoffrey Kavate and Manager for Marketing and Customer Experience Ms. Miriam Mwakundia.

The delegation aims to network with international cruise line executives, destination marketers, and fellow port authorities to forge new partnerships, attract additional vessel calls, and boost passenger throughput at Kenya’s ports.
“Our participation at Seatrade Cruise Global underscores KPA’s commitment to elevating Mombasa and Lamu as competitive, world-class cruise hubs on the East African coast,” said a KPA representative. The authority is keen to leverage emerging industry trends that favour diversification beyond traditional Caribbean and Mediterranean routes toward new, high-potential destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean.
Discussions throughout the week are expected to cover decarbonisation, digital transformation, sustainable tourism models, and strategies to ensure cruise growth delivers tangible economic benefits to local communities — priorities that align closely with Kenya’s ambitions.
By engaging at this premier platform, KPA seeks to accelerate cruise sector development, create more jobs along the coast, and strengthen linkages between maritime tourism and inland attractions such as national parks and wildlife reserves.
