The Federal Government, to restore goodwill and forge better relations with its workforce, has now announced plans to start the long overdue payments of outstanding wage award arrears of N35,000 owed to federal civil servants.
In a statement released in Abuja, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) stated that workers are to begin receiving the payments in installments of N35,000 monthly over five months.
As explained by the director of press and public relations, Bawa Mokwa, the first installment will be paid immediately following the April 2025 salary payment so that civil servants do not experience further delays.
The N35,000 wage award introduced in 2023 as palliatives to cushion the effects of the removal of the petrol subsidy and other economic reforms has already been partially paid, and five months remain outstanding.
This new initiative comes on the heels of an earlier commitment made by the Federal Government, back in January 2025, to pay all workers’ arrears.

Apart from the wage award, the government renewed its commitment to the welfare of its workers, maintaining that the full implementation of remuneration agreements is vital to increasing productivity across ministries, departments, and agencies.
This was echoed by Minister of Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha in recent meetings with both the Trade Union Congress and the Congress of University Academics, where she stressed that the government was committed to executing agreements reached during the 2023 National Minimum Wage negotiations.
The announcement came on the heels of mounting agitation from organised labour about the delay of the implementation of the minimum wage and other worker entitlements, with the Nigeria Labour Congress earlier this month bemoaning delayed payments.
