Senegal has commenced the construction of a Burn Treatment Center in Dakar, a major step toward strengthening the country’s healthcare system.
Announcing the initiative, Minister of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines Birame Souleye Diop emphasized the center’s role in providing specialized care for burn victims and reducing the need for costly medical evacuations abroad.
“The burn center, which will integrate intensive care, plastic surgery, and rehabilitation services on a single site, will drastically cut down on medical evacuations while offering life-saving treatment within the country,” Diop stated.
With severe burn injuries still contributing to high mortality rates due to a lack of specialized treatment, the new facility is expected to enhance local healthcare capacities. The center is particularly vital as industrial risks in the energy and petroleum sectors continue to rise, making advanced burn care increasingly necessary.

While partial funding has been secured, an additional 15 billion CFA francs is still required to complete the project. The initiative has gained broad support from stakeholders across the health, defense, and energy sectors, signaling a national commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and patient outcomes.
“This center is an expression of our commitment to restoring hope and life to those who have suffered these atrocities,” Diop remarked, describing the facility as a humanistic response to the suffering of burn victims and their families.
