Ghana’s National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has announced a series of activities to commemorate the country’s 68th Independence Anniversary.
The events, aimed at fostering national pride and historical reflection, will run from February 28 to March 6, 2025.
Key activities include commemorating the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident, a landmark event in Ghana’s independence struggle, set to take place on Friday, February 28. This will be followed by the finals of a nationwide school quiz competition on Sunday, March 2, and a debate competition on Tuesday, March 4.
Additionally, an awards program recognizing outstanding school children is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, culminating in a grand ceremonial parade at the Presidency on Thursday, March 6.
Spotlight on 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident
To honor the sacrifices of Ghana’s independence heroes, the NCPC’s Communications Subcommittee will launch an extensive information and educational campaign leading up to the February 28 Wreath Laying Ceremony. The initiative aims to reignite interest in Ghana’s history, particularly among the youth.

As part of the campaign, historical content on the 1948 shooting of three ex-servicemen will be shared across various media platforms. Additionally, a virtual discussion titled “Changing Face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the Past and Present” will be hosted on X-space, bringing together experts to reflect on the significance of past struggles.
Media outlets, including radio, television, online, and print, have been urged to amplify conversations around the anniversary’s theme and encourage public engagement. The wreath-laying ceremony itself is scheduled to take place at Nationalism Park at 8 a.m. on February 28 and will be broadcast live across multiple platforms.
The NCPC has called on media practitioners, bloggers, and the general public to participate actively by sharing information about the activities, emphasizing the importance of national unity and remembrance.
