The National Communications Authority (NCA) has initiated the ECOWAS “Free Roaming Initiative,” enabling citizens of Ghana, Benin, and Togo to enjoy reduced telecommunication costs while traveling across these countries.
Under the agreement, individuals will be able to make and receive calls, send SMS, and access the internet at significantly lower rates through their Mobile Network Operators.
The launch event in Accra marked a significant milestone in promoting regional integration, with Mr. Charles Acheampong, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Communication, emphasizing the benefits of “affordable and seamless” cross-border communication.
Mr. Acheampong highlighted the initiative’s impact, stating, “By enabling affordable and seamless communication across our borders, we are not only enhancing the convenience of travel and business but also strengthening the social and economic fabric of our nations.”
He further noted that the program symbolizes a commitment to regional unity within the ECOWAS community and has the potential to boost cross-border trade and economic activities.
He also urged stakeholders to ensure the stability and security of telecommunications networks as the initiative is rolled out, warning of the need to address cybersecurity risks in the digital age.
Dr. Joe Anokye, Director General of the NCA, mentioned that the Authority would monitor the initiative’s usage and gather feedback for future regulatory decisions.
Vice Chair of the ECOWAS Roaming Implementation Committee, Mr. Yaw Boamah Baafi, explained that users would enjoy the service for 30 days or 300 minutes, with provisions allowing for free call reception outside one’s home country.
Representatives from telecommunication companies in Ghana, Benin, and Togo expressed their excitement, with plans underway to expand the initiative across other African countries.
