Traffic police have raised alarms over the increasing number of fatal road accidents occurring after midnight, attributing them primarily to drunk driving.
Assistant Commissioner Reginald Matlhaba of the South-Central Division expressed concern about the tendency of motorists to drive long distances after drinking, which often leads to deadly crashes.
“Someone would be residing in Metsimotlhabe but would drive to Ramotswa or Mochudi for drinks or vice-versa,” he said, highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence on extended routes.
Matlhaba pointed out that these accidents, frequently happening after 2 a.m., occur when drivers ignore road signs and speed to reach home before falling asleep.
“They fail to observe road signs, drive intoxicated and speeding, and end up causing unnecessary accidents that usually claim lives,” he added.
Despite the Botswana Police Service’s ongoing efforts to combat drunk driving, these tragic incidents continue to claim lives, underscoring the need for motorists to act responsibly.
