President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi has lauded the British government for its steadfast support and partnership with Botswana.
Speaking during a farewell call with the outgoing British High Commissioner, Ms. Sian Price, President Masisi reflected on the robust bilateral relations that have been fostered over the years.
During the meeting, Masisi highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, dating back to Botswana’s pre-independence era.
He emphasized the British government’s substantial contributions, including financial aid, technical assistance, and empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable groups and underdeveloped areas in Botswana.
The President particularly noted the British government’s crucial role in developing Botswana’s education sector and its instrumental support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We emerged strong, thanks to your support,” said President Masisi. “Our entire government system is modeled after the British system.”
In her farewell remarks, High Commissioner Price underscored the enduring strength of the UK-Botswana relationship, attributing it to the shared handling of various challenges.
She highlighted the significant impact of British assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the deployment of UK health professionals to bolster Botswana’s healthcare system.
Ms. Price also discussed ongoing collaborations, such as child protection initiatives with the Ministry of Justice and the Botswana Police Service, which included the establishment of child-friendly service points at police stations and courts.
She noted exciting developments in sectors like manufacturing and energy, facilitated by British support, and expressed optimism about the future of the partnership.
Looking ahead, Ms. Price emphasized the importance of mutual trade equality, expressing interest in expanding the export of Botswana products, including the citrus harvest from Selebi Phikwe, to the UK.
She affirmed that the UK and Botswana are equal partners, committed to assisting each other in a spirit of mutual respect as they move into the next phase of their partnership.
