The Ghana Chamber of Mines has donated GH₵2.4 million to support victims affected by the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.
This donation was made through the Citi TV/Citi FM relief campaign, aiming to alleviate the impact of the dam spillage on communities spanning seven districts across the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions.
The President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Joshua Mortoti, emphasized the importance of sustainable assistance, stating that the mining industry’s leadership and membership are fully aligned with Citi FM’s approach to providing impactful and lasting support to those affected.
Breaking down the donation, Mortoti outlined that 10 percent, equivalent to GH₵240,000, would be allocated for water treatment, 30 percent (GH₵720,000) for medical supplies, and a substantial 50 percent, amounting to GH₵1.2 million, would be dedicated to constructing temporary shelters.
These shelters aim to provide a safe haven for individuals and families affected by the crisis, offering them not only immediate relief but also a place to rebuild their lives.
10 percent, or GH₵240,000, has been earmarked for ancillary relief items, including food, clothing, and other essential provisions, further supporting the affected communities on their path to recovery.
Angela List, the Second Vice President of the Chamber, reiterated the commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the industry’s keen interest in ensuring the long-term well-being of the impacted communities.
