The Volta River Authority (VRA) has issued a precautionary alert to residents living downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in Ghana, urging them to prepare for a controlled spillage in the coming days.
The decision is in response to the persistent rise in water levels in both dams caused by recent heavy rainfall.
In a press statement released on September 12, 2023, by the Corporate Affairs and External Relations Unit, the VRA noted the escalating inflow pattern and water levels in the Akosombo dam.
The VRA emphasized its commitment to following its Emergency Preparedness Plan and Standard Operating Procedures.
The authority also indicated that they have already notify key stakeholders of the impending situation.
While monitoring the reservoir levels closely, the VRA has advised residents along the Volta River and downstream of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures.
The VRA pledged to providing regular updates to ensure swift response to any potential emergency arising from this development.
“The Volta River Authority (VRA) wishes to inform the general public that it has observed a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo dam.
“In line with our Emergency Preparedness Plan and Standard Operating Procedures, the Volta River Authority has duly notified key stakeholders of this development,” the Authority wrote.
