Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has confirmed a cyberattack on the Kenyan eCitizen portal, assuring that no data was compromised during the breach.
The intrusion, orchestrated by a group identifying as Anonymous Sudan, caused an interruption in the government’s online services, which led to complaints from citizens unable to access government services through the platform.
Mr. Owalo stated that the attack was not an unusual occurrence in the digital age and that the government has been taking steps to resolve the issue and fortify the portal against potential threats.
The Cabinet Secretary maintained that the government has implemented a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy to counter such cyberattacks.
He further shared that the attack initially slowed the portal’s functionality, a problem which he said was being addressed.
As part of the government’s proactive measures against cyber threats, the Office of the Data Commission has been activated.
Anonymous Sudan claimed further attacks on government digital services via social media, stating their intention to continue despite the government’s cybersecurity efforts.
