In an effort to address the growing backlog of passport applications, the Kenyan government has unveiled plans to streamline the processing time to just one week.
Interior Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, declared on Wednesday that he had directed the Immigration Department to clear the current backlog of 42,000 passports within the next 21 days and subsequently ensure that all applications are processed within a maximum of 7 days.
Prof. Kindiki also assured applicants with emergency situations, such as those seeking medical or educational services, that their applications would be considered and processed within 24 hours.
The backlog was primarily attributed to a malfunctioning printing machine, but the government has taken steps to rectify the issue by fixing the faulty equipment and delivering 60,000 passport booklets to address the backlog.
